Continued upswing in the semiconductor market

Annual review of quality testing by White Horse Laboratories

Recently, the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) reported that global semiconductor sales reached a new high of $573.5 billion in 2022. Although the increase slowed in the second half of the year, global semiconductor sales increased 3.2% overall compared to 2021.

Despite short-term revenue fluctuations, the long-term outlook for the semiconductor market remains positive. SIA's CEO even called semiconductors the centerpieces of our digital world. They are becoming increasingly important as they fundamentally contribute to improving technological performance, efficiency and promoting connectivity.

The dynamism of the semiconductor market is also reflected in the fact that at White Horse Laboratories we achieved a new record number of tested components last year.

Overview of tested electronic components

While a wide variety of different product types have passed through our test laboratories, for the sake of clarity we will limit this report to only the most important components.

The most common electronic components tested at White Horse Laboratories in 2022 included transceivers, MOSFETs, and microcontrollers (MCUs).

Also noteworthy is the continued demand for MCU microcontrollers and FPGAs. MCU microcontrollers are special CPUs characterized by their reduced specifications and integrated interfaces for memory, timers, USB, A/D conversion, DMA and more. FPGAs, on the other hand, are individually programmable circuits that offer a high degree of customizability. They are used primarily in the communications industry and are expected to see increased use in new areas such as artificial intelligence in the future.

Top manufacturers of the electronic components we tested

Texas Instruments (TI) continues to assert itself as the global market leader in diverse product areas, such as digital signal processors, digital-to-analog converters, and integrated circuits. The industry giant has topped the list of manufacturers whose components are tested by our test houses for several years.

ON Semiconductor, formerly the semiconductor division of Motorola, has been expanding its market share in the emerging areas of new energy vehicles in recent years. These include automotive MOSFET power semiconductors, IGBT modules, other automotive systems, and CMOS image sensors. In line with this development, ON Semiconductor ranked second among manufacturers whose components passed through our test laboratories last year.

Semiconductors will continue to play an important role in the future

Overall, it is clear that White Horse Laboratories is operating in a market that, despite occasional fluctuations, is showing steady growth. The continued upswing in the semiconductor market and the central role semiconductors play in our increasingly digitalized and connected world are reflected in the growing number and variety of components we test.

Our ongoing efforts to expand our testing and logistics services - from the opening of new laboratories to accreditation and the consistent expansion of existing sites - keep us at the cutting edge of technology and meet the challenges of a constantly evolving market.
